The East Jackson boys and girls cross country teams finished first in the Class AA Sectional Tournament Saturday in Jefferson, and will advance to the Class AA State Tournament in Carrollton this weekend. 

The boys finished with a meet-low 53 points, beating KIPP Atlanta Collegiate by 36 points. The girls finished with 91 points, two ahead of Coahulla Creek High School and eight ahead of Union County. 

The boys enter the state championship meet ranked as the No. 1 team in Class AA and have experience on the state championship course from earlier this year when they competed in a meet on the course. 

This past Saturday, senior Hayden Hodges placed fifth overall with a time of 17:23.17 while Michael Kelleher (17:44.38) and Colin Ramsey (17:45.77) finished 10th and 11th, respectively. Griffin McDaniel finished 20th with a time of 18:26.74 and Christian Smith (20:22.83) placed 59th. 

On the girls side, junior Courtney Cameron placed fifth overall with a time of 21:58.11, while Vada Hanna (23:45.12) and Norah Nichols (23:52.94) finished 13th and 14th, respectively. Piper Pennington finished 28th overall with a time of 24:56.19 and Tallulah Williams (26:35.54) placed 42nd.
